UNDERSTANDING MEDICARE
The Different Parts of Medicare
MEDICARE PART A
Hospital Insurance
Part A generally helps cover inpatient hospital care, skilled nursing facility care, hospice care, and certain home health services.
MEDICARE PART B
Medical Insurance
Part B generally helps cover services from doctors and other healthcare providers, outpatient care, preventive services, durable medical equipment, and certain home health services.
MEDICARE PART C
Medicare Advantage
Medicare Advantage plans are offered by Medicare-approved private insurance companies as an alternative way to receive your Medicare Part A and Part B benefits. Many plans include prescription drug coverage and may offer additional benefits.
Plan availability, provider networks, costs, benefits, and coverage rules vary by plan and location.
MEDICARE PART D
Prescription Drug Coverage
Part D helps cover the cost of prescription medications. Coverage may be obtained through a standalone Medicare prescription drug plan or included with certain Medicare Advantage plans.
Each plan has its own formulary, pharmacy network, premiums, deductibles, and cost-sharing requirements.
YOUR COVERAGE OPTIONS
Two Main Ways to Receive Medicare Coverage
ORIGINAL MEDICARE
Original Medicare includes Part A and Part B and is administered by the federal government.
People with Original Medicare may also choose to purchase:
• A Medicare Supplement insurance policy to help with certain out-of-pocket costs
• A standalone Medicare Part D prescription drug plan
• Separate dental, vision, or hearing coverage
MEDICARE ADVANTAGE
Medicare Advantage, also known as Part C, is offered through Medicare-approved private insurance companies.
These plans provide Part A and Part B coverage. Many include prescription drug coverage and may offer additional benefits that Original Medicare does not cover.
Provider networks, referrals, prior authorization requirements, premiums, copayments, benefits, and service areas vary by plan.
MEDICARE SUPPLEMENT INSURANCE
Help With Certain Original Medicare Costs
Medicare Supplement insurance, also called Medigap, works alongside Original Medicare.
Depending on the policy, it may help cover certain deductibles, copayments, and coinsurance that Original Medicare does not pay. You must generally have Medicare Part A and Part B to purchase a Medigap policy.
Medigap policies do not generally include prescription drug coverage, so a separate Part D plan may be needed.

ENROLLMENT TIMING
When Should You Begin Reviewing Medicare?
For most people, the Initial Enrollment Period surrounding their 65th birthday lasts seven months:
• Three months before the month you turn 65
• The month you turn 65
• Three months after the month you turn 65
Your individual enrollment timing may be different if you continue working, have employer-sponsored health insurance, qualify for Medicare due to disability, or experience another qualifying event.
Starting early gives you time to understand your choices and avoid feeling rushed.

Common Medicare Questions Answered for your convenience.
Some people are automatically enrolled in Medicare Part A and Part B, while others must actively sign up. It generally depends on whether you are already receiving Social Security or Railroad Retirement Board benefits before turning 65.
Medicare Advantage is an alternative way to receive your Medicare Part A and Part B benefits through a Medicare-approved private insurance company.
Medicare Supplement insurance works alongside Original Medicare and helps pay certain costs that Original Medicare does not cover. You cannot use a Medicare Supplement policy to pay Medicare Advantage plan costs.
Many Medicare Advantage plans include Part D prescription drug coverage, but plan features vary. It is important to review a plan’s formulary, pharmacy network, costs, and coverage rules before enrolling.
That depends on how you receive your Medicare coverage and the specific plan. Medicare Advantage plans may use provider networks. Before choosing a plan, we can help you verify whether your doctors and preferred healthcare facilities participate in the plan’s network.
Medicare Advantage and prescription drug plans can generally be changed only during applicable enrollment periods or when you qualify for a Special Enrollment Period. The rules for obtaining or changing Medicare Supplement insurance are different and may involve medical underwriting outside certain protected periods.
There is no charge for an initial Medicare consultation. We’ll discuss your needs, answer your questions, and help you understand the options available through Hill Insurance & Benefits.
